Sonatype has several incredible initiatives that make it a place where voices are heard. In 2018, Women at Sonatype was formed to build engagement and awareness in our remote organization. We have an LGBTQ+ group and the Community, Belonging, Inclusion, and Diversity (CBID) Committee, where new representatives are elected several times a year to represent the holistic experience of workplace culture.
We’ve also defined our core values as part our Employee Value Proposition initiative, which allows every person to participate in forming tomorrow’s Sonatype. We’re focused on having great people come together to become better as a team where everyone has the chance to thrive.

There’s a well-known saying in many English-speaking countries; “The clothes don’t make the man.” Yet, my entire working life I’ve heard women be judged for their physical appearance, especially as it relates to ‘professionalism’. Whether it’s hairstyle, clothing style, preference for body art or other attributes — I’m committed to #breakingthebias that equates a woman’s physical appearance to her professional competence.
I am participating in #Break the Bias on International Women’s Day because the message is broad enough to include everyone. At Sonatype, our collective talent comes from people of varied backgrounds and individual journeys that make us who we are and enable us to think the way we do to solve problems in line with our company mission. Breaking the bias that each of us may carry helps to ensure that we remain unified through our core values towards realizing our company mission.
Early in my career, I went to a technical conference and found myself to be one of 5 women out of 500 attendees. Things have improved, but not nearly enough. We need to break the bias that stops girls from majoring in STEM, and later having fulfilling careers.
